The Travel Book served my purpose /
/ 2010-09-05
I first saw the Travel Book in a secured Alzheimer's care unit and noted that the patients loved turning the pages and viewing the beautiful pictures. Some of them had traveled extensively and the book triggered memories and spawned conversation. I purchased one for my mother, who lives in assisted living because of her severe memory loss. She loves it! We talk on the phone for hours as she turns the pages and asks me to look up more information on my "machine" (computer). At 85, she is still fascinated by other cultures and "in the moment" asks great questions and appreciates "learning".
GOOD PICTURE, LITTLE INFORMATION /
/ 2010-03-03
I LOVE THE BOOK, THOUGH IT HAS REALLY GOOD PICTURES.. IT COULD HAVE A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT COUNTRIES AND WHAT TO VISIT!.
Great book. /
/ 2009-12-29
This book is great. It gives details for over 200 countries and the pictures are nice.
Good Book.Need Update /
/ 2009-11-29
This is a Good book.
But after time past, it need to be updated and improved.
and also need to add more info, so many people will be happy
just what i expected! /
/ 2009-04-29
the book came to me in the condition i expected and more! i had gotten a little message from the seller that said, "thanks for your purchase, and i hope you enjoy this book as much as i did!" i was very touched and i love the book so much!

As a newcomer to the manga experience, I was intrigued by Yuichi Yokoyama's book Travel. It is a multifaceted exploration of travel, time and human interaction with an increasingly technologically dependent society. The artist's work leaves ample room for the viewer's own responses and interpretations. As I "read", I became interested in why there were no female characters included in this work. Surely women ride trains in Japan. Given the artist's attention to detail, this must have been a choice. Once again, this work has me thinking, but this time about what has been left out and its significance. All in all worth a look or two.
Best Manga of 2053 /
/ 2008-12-01
Manga for the BLDGBLOG crowd, Yokoyama's second book just seems like it's from 2053. A handful of his doll-like characters go on a train trip through radically terraformed landscapes. He riffs on the small things, like a coffee dispenser, and the large, like Tokyo's traffic. 200 pages race by. And the silent journey ends with a droll payoff.
I wrote about Yokoyama for the Comics Journal in 2004 and 2006; in both cases, I struggled to find comparisons. It's manga, but not like any other I've read. While he shifts between art gallery and comics page like some American and European cartoonists, his work doesn't look like theirs. It's handmade but sharp; deadpan but open; and it has ducks.
For a reader searching for the new, it's a thrill. And well adapted by Picturebox. I can't think of a better home for Yokoyama's work, outside an architectural press. And Travel has a special appeal if you've seen Japan by rail. The snapshots are just a touch more constructivist than laconic.

Very Good Book But Not Actually a Field Guide /
/ 2010-08-02
It is difficult to give this book a rating based on its title. This is an excellent introduction to most everything you need to know to work as a travel photographer - a 4 or 5 star book, with helpful information for both beginner and more advanced photographers that isn't found in most other travel photography books. And it contains valuable contributions from several professional travel photographers like Bob Krist and Catherine Karnow. However, it is not in any way a "field guide," so as the "Ultimate Field Guide," it earns about 1 star. It is not designed as a quick and easy reference to any of the topics it covers (as the term "field guide" would imply.) It is a book to read before your travels, and a book to read to learn the realities of working as a travel photographer. It is not a book to carry in your camera bag in the field to pull out and help you with a specific shooting situation. (It is also a book about how to take travel photos in the visual and editorial style of Traveler magazine - typically beautiful and unique but also it begins to seem sometimes formulaic, stereotypical, or contrived. For example, while the book encourages you to "seek the authentic," it also discusses hiring a model in a colorful sari to pose in front of the Taj Mahal.)
I would highly recommend this book for someone who is truly interested in becoming a commercial travel photographer, as it competently and thoroughly covers numerous aspects of this vocation - technical, logistical, and perhaps most importantly, learning how to tell a story through photographs. Or if you don't wish to become a pro travel photographer but want to learn to capture better travel images, it will be most helpful for someone whose travel style truly accommodates the time and effort if takes to make great travel images.
Practical tips throughout. /

The Ultimate Guide for the Ultimate Image /
/ 2010-03-11
If you travel and take pictures, this is a great book. Simple as that. Read it first, travel later.
It takes you "behind the scenes" with several National Geographic TRAVELER magazine photographers and explains not just what they saw, but what they thought. This book explores the how and why of travel photography better than any other book I have read on the subject.
It is a must have book for anyone interested in becoming a travel photographer or anyone that just wants to shoot like one. It will make you think more like a travel photographer so that you can better see like a travel photographer.
Buy it. Read it. Use it.
Whether Your Interest is Travel, Wildlife, Landscape, or Garden - This Book Will Help Improve Your Photographic Skills /
/ 2010-02-26
The decision to review the recently published National Geographic Ultimate Field Guide to Travel Photography (National Geographic Photography Field Guides) in The Well-read Naturalist was not one made lightly. After all, WRN is explicitly dedicated to books pertaining directly to the study of natural history in all its myriad forms. Would a book providing advice and instruction in how to be a better photographer, particularly as understood from the perspective of a traveler, or a photojournalist assigned to document the sights to be seen and experiences to be had in a specific geographic place, be of use or interest to naturalists? However after having read it and discovering that the information, advice, and inspiration it provided began almost immediately to influence my own field photographic work on natural history subjects for the better, I could not but help to record my impressions of the book here for the benefit of all.
Written by National Geographic Traveler's senior editor Scott S. Stuckey and with considerable contributions from fifteen of that publication's finest photographers, the National Geographic Ultimate Field Guide to Travel Photography begins with something all too many books on photographic subjects for a widely diverse audience neglect - a brief but effective overview of the important concepts and skills needed to understand and employ the techniques that will be presented later in the book. Such a beginning may seem redundant to some; however to the beginner still working to master many of the elementary concept of good photographic practice such an overview is both helpful as well as instructive, and to the more experienced photographer, who may have worked him or herself into a personal technique rut, it is a reminder not to neglect a different way of capturing an image that might be outside of an established comfort zone. To this reviewer, it spoke clearly of the author's commitment to the idea that the book's primary purpose was as a vehicle for instruction; that he genuinely wanted to help all who read it to improve their respective photography skills.
As might be expected from an institution that has become world famous for its ability to convey unforgettable stories using both words and pictures, immediately following the overview of the "core concepts," Mr. Stuckey and his collaborators address the importance of narrative in any collection of photographs. This perhaps may be the single most overlooked idea among amateur photographers who think most commonly in terms of the individual subject in each individual photograph but fail to connect the subject to its background (and vice versa) or to develop a connection between a group of photographs. While the emphasis is placed squarely on, and the examples given drawn from, travel photography, its applicability of the information presented to most every aspect of nature or landscape photography is astonishing.
Following these two topics, the book advances into more specific areas, beginning with the importance of, quest for, and discovery of authentic photographic subjects, to how to photograph in the challenging lighting conditions of cities (the parallels of which to natural environments, especially canyons and forests, are easily drawn and wholly appropriate), rural and countryside photographic subjects, and concluding the section with a chapter exclusively dedicated to nature-oriented subjects. Each of these chapters is not only a didactic presentation, but is also liberally interwoven with the advice and experiences of the fifteen photographers whose expertise Mr. Stuckey drew upon for the creation of the book.
Ultimately concluding in a similar vein to that in which it began, with advice on (this time) more advanced technical and work-flow topics such as image management and a two page series of notes titled "Useful Information" (and indeed it is), the National Geographic Ultimate Field Guide to Travel Photography well proves itself to be far more than well worth the time spent reading it. The information and advice it contains is so well presented and immediately applicable to most everyone who uses a camera out-of-doors or on "on the road" that it should be considered as a "must read" for all concerned. Furthermore, the inspiration it is capable of providing goes well beyond the objective sum of the techniques its author presents in its pages. The encouragement to see every photograph as a puzzle to be solved, to view everyday scenes in their potential to be organized into a image that conveys not only momentary visual pleasure but an entire story, is a significant element of the mind of a great photographer. For this more than perhaps all else, the reader of this book will profoundly thank Mr. Stuckey, National Geographic, and all who contributed to it with each improvement they notice in their own future photographic work.

The most important part /
/ 2010-03-19
This is a great guide for taking better travel photographs than you ever have before. Especially in this economy, travel is more of a luxury than it used to be. Whether you are a seasoned travel photographer or not, to be able to bring back fantastic shots your trip requires the help this book provides. The most important part is in the PLANNING...that is, to anticipate being able to employ many of the effects, filters and compositional tips employed in this comprehensive guide. Being ready in advance means missing less opportunities that may never be repeated. Enjoy your trip!!
Revised 2009 edition is a lot more "digital" /
/ 2009-11-16
By reading the comments about the previous editions of this book apparently most of the complaints were about the lack of information about digital photography...clearly the author had most of his work on film, the example pictures showed on the book were mostly photographed on 35mm film but this 2009 edition has lots of information about digital photography, even cell phone photography is covered on this book, so "digitalized" this edition is.
It's a great reading especially for those photo enthusiasts that want to have a better use of their DSLRs. I enjoyed even the concise information on censor formats and it's so up to date it even mentions the micro four-thirds format, it also covers each situation you can find on travel photography such as shooting on different lighting conditions, crowded places, potraits of travel companions, etc and the description of how the example shots were made help you figure out a lot on the exposure/lens necessary to each situation.
That's also a great book to read along with your DSLR manual, since it will help you understand most of those functions cameras have nowadays but just the pros know how to use it. Since the information is condensed and sometimes clearly focused toward begginers it's a not a must have for a Pro but definitely a good reading for travel photography enthusiasts and those who wants to take full advantage of the DSLR world.

For what I shoot and my style, this book is fantastice. Full of helpfull information and tips. The only down side is that you realize you need to get off your butt and Go Travel! I love this book and buying it on Amazon was easy, an 8th of the price and I got it in three days. I'm a happy man! Keep Shooting...Micah May
Taking pics /
/ 2007-09-13
There seems to be a lot of good info in here but its not easy to get to. A lot of the book is still dedicated to 35mm film photography and it's format is not very easy to use. I would have preferred a book with ring binding or something and maybe heavier construction for field use.
Very simple and obvious, 80% of the book is not useful /
/ 2007-08-25
In case you look for a very basic list of basic things related to photography, this book is probably useless for you. It has a lot of content related to non-digital cameras, which probably is irrelevant to most readers today. And it is very superficial. I only take away a few tips on low light photography, but that is not worth the price of the book.

An overall good book that needs some update and expansion. /

Two knowledgable authors gave in-depth treatments on the subject of DCM. The math is fairly easy to follow in most places. The biggest strength is a nice combination of theoretical and practical issues. The readers however should be benefitted from a new edition, which should include, among other things, extended exposures on ordered responses and grouped/aggregated data analyses with DCM. An introduction to the existing software and relevant issues should also be a plus.
Excellent treatment of transportation travel demand /
/ 1998-12-10
This book is intended for serious graduate students who wish to learn demand analysis. This book is used as a text for the demand analysis course at MIT for 1st/2nd year grad students. Rigorous statistical and econometric background is a must preparation for this book. Includes very crisp and elegant proofs and dicussion. Impressive methodological treatment for demand analysis. Although all examples are drawn from the Transportation field, the content can easily be implemented for Marketing Science and other fields.

Review of "The Art of Travel With a Sketchbook" /
/ 2007-11-05
To start at the end, "Make each day in life more meaningful by capturing Priceless Memories" is the beginning of an adventure everyone should take. Marie Le Glatin Keis' book, "The Art of Travel With a Sketchbook" is just plain captivating.
She provides simple instructions and major motivation to capture memories using art and words. There are six sections with easy-to-follow tips on how to make memories not only when traveling but even in daily life. The examples of her student's words, art and growth are proof that it works for beginners and even experienced artists.
I am already a daily sketcher and I was motivated to do, try more and enjoy more.

Amazing planet /
/ 2010-04-20
Am from the tropics...I live in an exotic part of the world. Wild landscapes and islands, and I never take this for granted. The photographs in this books are amazing, but tell a broader story, of how beautiful and complex yet intertwined our world cultures are, and how fragile the environment is....and what we must do to keep it (the environment). Art Wolfe is now one of my favourite photographers.
great book /
/ 2010-04-08
Buy this book. PLain and simple. I don't understand what that guy was talking about with his one star review. For strictly landscapes there are other photographers out there that are better, but the people and wildlife images in this book are amazing. Wolfe has a great eye for catching people in their environment and bringing the two together. And his wildlife shots are up there with the best.
I am a semi-pro photographer so I especially like thet he gives the technical data for each photo at the end of the book.
Same Book? /

Im sorry but Im going to disagree entirely with the other reviews on here. The book is poorly printed and the photography is average at best. Im not sure what people see in Art Woolfe and his photography. There is so many other fantastic photographers and their books available here you really owe it to yourself to explore a few more. Mines going up for sale.

This earth of ours never ceases to amaze! /

You've seen Planet Earth, you've visited the National Parks, you've seen all kinds of beautiful photography. But Travels to the Edge proves that there is always more.
This utterly gorgeous book, printed in a size that fits on any table or bookshelf, brings the reader (and viewer) to every continent. Although its mission is to document the earth's wild places and wild animals, it has some of the finest people pictures I have ever seen. Even photos of places we have seen before are captured in a unique way that reminds us that there is so much of this world we have never seen or experienced.
Each photo is accompanied by a description of its locale, a bit of the background behind the scene, and why it was selected for this book. And the "Photographer's Field Notes" document the camera used, the lens, and the camera settings for each photo.
This is a photo essay and a document to share and to treasure for a lifetime.

It doesn't get any better than this. These posters were all produced to create an emotional response in the viewer - and they clearly still have that power. Many of these images make you want to step into the scenes they portray, back into a time before WWII, or just after that great war when women all looked like Sophia Loren or Gina Lollabrigida (or strived to), and all the men looked like Rossano Brazzi. The romance of the lake district, of the Amalfi Coast, of the ruins in Rome ... all surprisingly free of people, just waiting for you to enjoy. As a designer, these posters really get my creative juices flowing. The curves, the blocks of color, the bold vertical lines - some art deco examples make you want to cry, they're so good. And all very Italian.

Champagne corks. Ski slopes. Sailboats. Delicious coffee. Scenic vistas. Iconic monuments. Historical sites. Bucolic countrysides. Rivers and oceans. Warm bed and breakfasts. Italian culinary delights.
They're all here and reproduced in gorgeous color in this luscious collection of Italian travel posters. Ottaviani's inspired design sets this book apart from other poster "collections" by virtue of his romantic heart. With each page, the design sweeps you away as if you are being whispered to by an Italian lover--in Firenze, in Capri, in Milano, and more.
"Travel Italia" would make a perfect gift for the Italiophile (is that a word?) in your life. Or, it would be a great way to introduce Italy to someone you care about. It's a very romantic book (without being sexual) and makes you want to take a journey to this beautiful country--with every turn of the page.
So why did I give "Travel Italia" four stars? Because I don't believe in perfection. But "Travel Italia" comes close. This book has sensuality coursing through its veins. Take this journey. You won't look back.
