a must have /
/ 2010-08-04
I first saw this book at an exclusive lodge in BC, Canada. After a few reviews it was an easy choice to purchase this book to accentuate my collection of high quality art books. If I only had one book to choose, Art... is comprehensive enough to cover art history from the early ages to current artists.
Art: Over 2,500 works is now my choice book for giftgiving.
Excellent reference book /
/ 2010-05-17
Great reference book, well organized. Has spinets and examples of all the major genres. A great introduction to art.
Tiny photos /
/ 2010-05-09
A coffee table art book should have large beautiful full page reproductions. This crams 5 to 10 tiny photos per page. Impossible to actually see any art.
Beautiful Book! /
/ 2010-02-25
I gave my niece this book as a gift. She is a young, gifted artist and she loves the book. It is a combination of photos and history that have been put together in a very appealing and informative way. The book is very comprehensive and spans the history and genres of art very well.
Picasso's duster /
/ 2010-01-27
If you come across this book, you cannot skip it without reading. Its like a code or like a never ending story for a kid.
The full page analysis of certain paintings are engrossing.
Las Meninas of Diego Velazquez and The Art of Painting by Jan Vermeer with the painters in the picture will make the future analysis of paintings make you imagine the painter too.
Pope Innocent X of Diego Velazquez, reinterpreted by Francis Bacon and Dejeuner sur l'herbe (main characters from The Judgement of Paris) of Eduard Manet interpreted by Picasso make you appreciate the importance of knowledge of history of art.
After reading this book, I look for lighting source in a picture, what composition means, have come to know of painting where a character can be repeated(The Tribute Money), have a favorite painting(Primavera).

Standard Text Delivery, Good Reference Material /
/ 2010-08-01
This is a good textbook for giving you the bald facts. When reading it I felt much the same as I felt reading all of my textbooks in college: Bored as hell but just interested enough to keep reading. I did learn quite a bit from this textbook, however. I will say one thing, this text book is an explosion of example pictures. I don't think I would have learned nearly as much had these not been an integral part of the layout. It makes sense when discussing the history of graphic design to use photos to back up your descriptions, but I've definitely read some textbooks that rely heavily on text and not enough on reference pictures and other visual material. That's part of what keeps me going when trying to dredge though textbooks like these. Overall I'd say this ranks higher than most textbooks I've been subjected to.
Terrible Resolution /
/ 2010-05-19
I purchased this for the kindle app on the iPad and was extremely disappointed in the sample images that are included throughout the ebook. They're low resolution, the image where timeline is showed, the text is barely readable.
useful book to know design history /
/ 2010-05-03
I am using this book for my online classes. It has all the material and references needed for the course.
Graphic Designers; steal this book. /
/ 2010-05-03
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1FLAD999FRUP4 This book is a must have if you are taking any graphic design courses. If you are already a graphic designer this book is also a must have. My class is long over and I wont sell this book, that says something considering I am a starving student, well maybe not starving.
I bought this for a class and I ended up reading it just because the information presented is both interesting and also very digestible to the average reader. It is a very interesting book that you can keep long after the class is over. One thing is it makes a fantastic coffee table book. It would not be out of place in the lobby of your design firm.
Content (+)
The content of this book covers from our earliest designs all the way to modern design and the impact it has on our lives. The content of this book does not shy away from the controversial to the mundane.
Images (+)
I made the video clip so you could see the great artwork in this book. Many full color images are wonderful references that can be used when you are designing. "Good artists copy, great artists steal", Pablo Picasso
Text (+)
As I was saying this is not just boring text droning on and on. It, in fact is very interesting to those that are into graphic design or art. Any art is graphic design, and all graphic design is art. You really get that feeling after reading this book.
Overall this book is a great value at what I paid for it which is twice what it cost now. Get this BRAND NEW and you will have this book for many years.

Review of -Art History, Vol. 1, 3rd Edition- /
/ 2010-03-13
The text is well organized, doesn't seem to be pushing any political agenda (rare in history books,) the photographs are excellent, and the language is understandable. It is slightly dry.

Sweeping introduction to art history--Renaissance to present /
/ 2010-05-09
My son's textbook turns out to be a pleasure to me! This is Volume Two of a two volume set on art history. It covers the period from early Renaissance art in Europe to the post-1945 international avant-garde. In between is art from Europe and other parts of the world, including India, China, Japan, the Americas, the Pacific cultures, and Africa. The Introduction places the time frame in this book in context.
The book begins with such architectural gems as the Church of Saint-Maclou in Rouen, van Eyck's art, tapestry, frescoes, the Dome of the Florence Cathedral, Donatello's sculpture, and so on. Fast forward to the avant-garde. Anselm Kiefer's painting, "Heath of the Brandenberg March," is very telling to me.
All in all, a nice tour of art in all its forms and in different regions of the world from the Renaissance to the present. . . .
This book is great!! /
/ 2010-03-17
This book is amazing! I got the book within a few days and it was new, just as I expected. I'm using it to study for my AP Art History class and it's just what I needed. It has comprehensive explanations of all the major works of Art History starting at Gothic European Art. I strongly recommended it for anyone interested in learning about art.
Never Received Book! /
/ 2009-09-28
I ordered this book and never received it. After the appropriate time had passed, I contacted the seller. It was stated that the book had indeed been shipped. I allowed more time to pass in order to file a dispute after having contacted the seller 2 more times and never hearing back. I'm not sure what happened with this order, but it ended up being more trouble than it's worth.

Form and Function /
/ 2010-03-26
This is a great book on World History through the Arts and Minds of Artists throughout the ages. The author has provided a scaled down version of another book of Art. This is a heavy book to carry, not recommended for pregnant mothers or people with bad backs. Maybe it's not that bad, but it is loaded with creativity and passion. This book covers sculptors, painters, pencil artists, stain glass, plaster and paint, the entire gammit of creation has been expounded in this edition. Having visited many Museum's such as the Louvre, the MET, palaces in Germany, castles in Italy, Historical Ruins around the globe. This is an excellent book, bringing back some of these memories. I really enjoyed this study.

I was very happy with the purchase, mainly because it was $50 off retail price and was free to ship.
Comprehensive /
/ 2007-02-16
Covers all the major styles and period the Western tradition of architecture. It does one chapter on Asian architecture but no single chapter can cover all the styles and history of the Asian countries of India, China, Japan, etc. It will be great for any aspiring architect who wants to have a good foundation...or to anyone who wants to appreciate the history of spatial design, and decoratives more.
PC-architecture /
/ 2006-01-05
This book was devised by a profoundly politically-correct mind. It is hard to read, inaccessible for an enthusiastic amateur, filled with historical gaps for a professional, and turns more often to social issues than to actual history of architecture. I don't know where to begin to list its omissions in terms of illustrations. On top of that, paperback is just too heavy and falls apart. I bought it at a clearance within a year after publication, it tells you something.

Photography: A cultural History /

I ordered this book for a summer school class, normally I purchase all my books on here the week before classes start and there is no problems. However I will no longer be doing that. The book never came, with most purchases they tell you once it has been shipped out, I never received that with this book. Now, it's completely pointless to order it again through someone else, seeing that there is only two weeks of summer school left.
They did however we refund my money but maybe they should refund my tuition instead.

Photography: A Cultural History
Very hard to read /
/ 2007-12-09
I found photography a Cultural History a very hard to read book. The author seems to jump from subject to subject and from photographer to photographer without any cohesive meaning. The chapters get harder to read as you move towards the later chapters, unfortunately. I don't see what is the sense to mentioning what a photogrpher did or said in a 2 or 3 sentence paragraph, then jump to another photographer and do the same, then jump to another one and do the same and so on and so on. Also, why is the photographers years of existence printed next to each photographers name in parenthesis ? This only makes the book even harder to read. I bought the book because I'm a photography student and the book is mandatory for one of the required courses, but if it was up to me, I would rather use and purchase "The History of Photography" written By Beaumont Newhall even though it is out of date. This was the book originally used in the past, but a few years ago allot of schools decided to switch to the Warner Marien book which I think was a big mistake.

i had to buy this for class, and for once it isn't a "textbook" ! finally an art textbook that doubles as a coffee table book, and one you can read. very good text - easy, and not too "academic." highly recommend.

I've used an earlier edition when I was in high school and finally got around to purchasing this edition for myself. The editors have always done an excellent job with each addition. The book is rich in information and most up-to-date with the latest information. Each page has graphic elements, from several pictures or multiple diagrams. Though thick and heavy, it's great for the coffee table.
