All Children's Writers Need This Book /
/ 2010-07-09
If you write for children, you have to know about standards, age-appropriate vocabulary, and what they're learning each year in school. You need this book, or your writing won't meet the expectations of the kids and paretns who read your writing.
Children's Writer's Word Book /

This book is a wonderful source for those who write for children. Albeit, children in target age groups may understand vocabulary at older grade levels. However this book guides and expands vocabulary choice per age range so writers use appropriate language and expand vocabulary according to benchmarks. This book helps focus better word choices for writers.
Words children should use are clearly listed by grade.
There is an overview of what children may be interested in at that age level. This is helpful for writing topics children want to read.
In all, Children's Writer's Word Book, is a worthy reference to own.
The book is guided by national standards in education, and benchmarks in learning. Hopefully, this is updated again as things change.
a Teens review /
/ 2010-01-08
Alright I have not actually read the book but I did read the part that it shows on Amazon. The style is good but the way that he tells you to write mysteries and stuff, no violence, no dead bodies for preteens. I'm only 13 so I'm not that far out of preteen hood but I have to say that I would be bored with his idea of a good story for this age group. Read the books that are popular now none of them do what he says. I won't give this book a lower review because I have not actually read the whole book and maybe it gets better.

This is a must have book for writers. It breaks down words to ages, and also gives you more information on when children stop thinking in concrete terms, when children start to learn contractions, and benchmarks for learning at each grade level.

Useful, but dated reference... / The book does offer some "how to", but is really more concentrated on helping you find and determine your own style. Being published well over over a decade ago, some of the information on approaching a publisher may be out of date. Also, the information on color separation is interesting, but not generally applicable or relevent anymore thanks to the computer revolution and the advent of the scanner. Useful for the information on focusing style, but a revised edition that takes into account the changes in technology and within the printing/publishing industry would be a bit more valuable. I would recommend two titles over this one; for writing/publishing, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Children's Books" by Harold D. Underdown, and for illustrating, Jill Bossert's "Children's Book Illustration: Step by Step Techniques".

Nancy S. Hands' guide to illustrating for children's books is both interesting, with timeless assistance on drawing, and at the same time, a bit dated.

Two boys' review: Investigative looking and thinking /
/ 2009-01-02
You've heard the saying before but this book "helps art come alive." My two sons, ages 6 and 4, were enthralled by the artwork. The secret to this book is on the back page, where author Gladys Blizzard offers these simple, yet essential directions:
Look at all the paintings again.
Choose the one that has your favorite colors.
Choose the one that makes you feel happiest.
Choose the one that makes you feel most frightened.
Choose the one you would most like to hike in.
Choose the one you would most like to bike in.
Choose the one you would most like to live in.
On another day, do this again. What you see, think, and feel may be different.
And then keep looking!
-----------------------------
This is our first experience with the "Come Look With Me" series of books. We fully intend to delve deeper and check out Come Look with Me: Enjoying Art with Children and Come Look With Me: Animals in Art.
As a final note, it was "Day and Night" by M.C. Escher and "The Oregon Trail" by Albert Bierstadt that interested my boys most.

Vanished but not forgotten /

This beautiful, quiet, luminous set of photographs provides a window on the Jewish world of prewar Eastern Europe through images of children from that era. Roman Vishniac captures many candid scenes of daily life and work for these children and their families. Look closely at their faces: you may be reminded of your grandparents' and great grandparents' photos from this period; but with a depth and sense of place not found in studio photographs. In its historical context, haunting and memorable. For the right person, a memorable gift, and worth owning yourself. Highly recommended.
Compelling portraits of childhood innocence before the advent of evil /
/ 2009-07-14
Photographer Roman Vishniac has made a significant contribution in these collection of photographs of a lost era - between 1935 and 1938, Vishniac travelled the cities and villages in Eastern Europe, taking pictures of children in the Jewish communities of Poland, Romania, Russia, and Hungary. Little did those children know that the shadow of death loomed over them, as Hitler and the Nazis were becoming ever more powerful, and anti-semitism was about to become more prevalent, on a scale that no one could have imagined possible.
These pictures are so precious - they tell a story of childhood and innocence, of happy times, of children being children, before they were robbed of all their happiness, security and innocence. The compelling portraits are accompanied by selected nursery rhymes, songs, poems and chants for children's games, both in Yiddish and in English translation. This is an important piece of documentation for we all know the fate of most of the Jewish communities in eastern Europe during WW II. I can't help but wonder at the eventual fates of these children, but at least the photographs in this book stand as a testament to the rich lives they once led, filled with hope and possibility.
Remenbrance /
/ 2008-03-06
The emotion that produces Vishniac's work,in the Eastern Europe Jewish comunnities a few years before the II World War is hard to put in words, because it's really a world that vanished not because of progress but because someone, with hatred, erased it from earth.
I feel grateful to Vishniac cause he allows us not to forget.
Wonderful /
/ 2002-05-26
I am an amateur photographer. 90% of good photography is in finding the right subject. These photos are stirring.
HAUNTING IMAGES OF INNOCENTS AND INNOCENCE DESTROYED / The children's eyes look at you with all the innocent curiousity and wonder of eternal, universal childhood. You look again and apprehension grips you: in a few short years after being photographed, the future of many of these children will be brutally terminated in an unmarked mass grave or a crematorium. The poignancy of this harsh reality is driven home when you read editor Mara Vishniac Kohn's dramatic description of her father's desperate, futile efforts to use his photographs as a means of arousing the conscience of the world and inspiring action to save these children and their families. We learn that Roman Vishniac sent these photos to the White House, only to recieve a perfunctory note thanking him for "the excellent pictures you sent the President." I must express my heartfelt compliments and appreciation to the editors, Mara Vishniac Kohn and Miriam Hartman Flacks, for the way in which they have presented these precious images-- accompanying them with the lyrics of appropriate Yiddish children's songs, in the original Yiddish and English transliteration and translation, rather than the standard dry caption text. I am especially grateful to the editors for including the music and annotation for these wonderful songs. This book belongs in every home and library.

This is a powerful book. In its pages we find starkly beautiful black and white photographs of children laughing, crying, playing, studying, working, in the course of their daily life... unaware of the horrific nightmare that will overtake them soon and destroy their world.
